Move over ‘Githeriman’, brave KBC journalist is the real hero

By NAHASHON MUSUNGU September 24th, 2017 2 min read

Between a man caught on camera going about the mundane task of munching a modest meal on a momentous day for a country and a journalist who risks his life to save city beggar in life threatening situation, who deserves to be celebrated most?

That is the debate that has been raging on social media.

Well, according to Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua its a no-brainer. The journalist takes it hands down.

Dr Mutua made his view public on social media while at the same time confirming that he has fulfilled an earlier pledge to reward Victor Muyakane, the journalist in question, with a Sh10,000 cash token.

“Forget the Githeriman, Victor is the real hero,” said Mutua.

HEROIC ACT

“I got in touch with him and kept my promise. Victor risked his life to save a man who cant repay him. He didn’t ask him which tribe he belongs to. All he wanted was to save the life of a fellow Kenyan. In the ensuing melee, he lost his phone and sustained injuries. But he saved a life. This is the Kenyan spirit.”

Muyakane has since attracted local and international headlines for his heroic act of withstanding the pain inflicted by multiple bee stings to save the beggar outside the Supreme Court.

“It was a painful experience. I couldn’t open my mouth to speak, the bees would get inside,” Victor Muyakane who works for Kenya Broadcasting Corporation told Nairobi News.

“They stung my lips, got inside my clothes and stung me everywhere, even my private parts.”

Apparently, Muyakane endured the deadly attack for a considerable amount of time before he finally delivered the disabled beggar to safety.
