Moses Kuria now faces prosecution over ‘panga’ statements

The Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko has directed that Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria be charged with incitement to violence for statements he uttered in his mother tongue at a public event four months ago.

Mr Tobiko on Monday acknowledged that he had received a recommendation from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission that Mr Kuria be charged with incitement to violence.

“Upon independent review, the DPP is satisfied that the evidence on the file is sufficient to sustain the recommended charge. The DPP has therefore concurred with NCIC and accordingly directed prosecution to ensue immediately,” Mr Tobiko said in a letter.

In early July, a video emerged in which Mr Kuria was captured allegedly urging some of his constituents to slash opponents of the revamped National Youth Services programmes with machetes at a public rally in his constituency.

Investigations over Mr Kuria’s statements have been ongoing since that time and the MP has on one occasion apologized and stated that he was quoted out of context.

At the height of the controversy, Mr Kuria at one point walked out of a live TV interview in protesting the replaying of the clip in which he made the inflammatory statements.
