Mombasa Road top ‘killer’ through accidents

Mombasa Road has recorded the highest number of fatalities occasioned by accidents, a new report has revealed.

According to the Road Crash Statistics Update report released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday, Mombasa Road recorded a total of 56 fatalities out of the 514 recorded in the whole of Nairobi.

Mombasa Road’s fatalities were followed by those reported along the Thika Superhighway where 44 cases were recorded since January.

Haile Selassie Avenue has the lowest number of fatalities with only four cases since the year started.

“Most road users are killed between 1800 hours to 2200 hours,” read the report in part.

Most of the deaths recorded across the country involved pedestrians whose fatalities are 992, passengers (519), motor cyclists (315), drivers (253), pillion passengers (158) and 57 pedal cyclists, bringing the total number of fatalities countrywide to 2,294.

Last year there were 2,907 fatalities recorded by NTSA, which was a significant reduction from the 3,218 cases recorded in 2013.

“The fatalities this year is 2.9 per cent higher than last year’s. Matatus contribute significantly to this deaths,” says the report.

The weekend was also found to be when most fatalities are recorded on different roads.
