Mobile ‘convenience stores’ making big profit from Nairobi traffic

Innovative Kenyans are taking advantage of the traffic snarl ups within Nairobi to sell their wares and products to thousands of motorists.

The busy Uhuru Highway and Mombasa Road seem the most preferred locations for these hawkers who spend the better part of the day trading their wares to motorists.

These small enterprise ventures are estimated to rake in tens of thousands of shillings daily and one particular spot has been “Uhuru Highway Supermarket” for proliferation of hawkers at the location.

In justification, a closer look at the range of products on sale and one will be forgiven for wondering whether there is need to visit a supermarket.

VALIDITY OF PRODUCTS

From bread, to milk, to tissue paper, books, calendars, newspapers, salt and groceries it seems everything you need is available on the roadside.

Then there is the other lot that hawks CDs, flash disks, music systems, and other paraphernalia such as painted pictures, cups, thermos flasks, nails, hammers, shoe polish and paints.

“We have to look for the market. The market won’t come to us,” one of the hawkers, who says she makes upto Sh 500 a day, told Nairobi News.

Concerns have however been raised in regard to the validity and standard of these goods on sale.
