MKU opens new campus in Lodwar
Turkana County now has its first university following the commissioning of a Sh 500 million campus in Lodwar by Mount Kenya University.
The new campus, with state-of-the-art buildings, sits on a 100 acres parcel of land along Lodwar-Kitale that was donated by the county government.
The commissioning ceremony for the newly-opened campus was officiated by Ms Christina Pratt Kenyatta, who is the Chairperson, Board of Trustees, National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya.
Speaking during the event on Sunday Ms Kenyatta said the varsity will go a long way in ensuring the students from Turkana County and South Sudan have access to higher education.

“Mount Kenyatta University has provided the needed tertiary education in the semi arid area and much needed water through boreholes and other community based projects to better the lives of the county residents,” she said.
MKU chairman and founder Simon Gicharu, who was also present during the ceremony, said the varsity will help the county to develop human resource capacity to serve the county.
“Education is the most powerful weapon that can change lives of any community. As a University will continue to invest in education,” said Gicharu.
Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok said his government has allocated Sh 320 million for bursaries to needy students while Lodwar Township MCA Bernard Kebo said he has allocated Sh 4 million for bursaries.
Officials from the Commission for University Education (CUE) recently inspected the new campus building which was constructed at a cost of Sh200 million.
