Miss World cancels Kenya trip for security reasons

April 6th, 2015 1 min read

A South African beauty queen has cancelled her planned visit to Kenya because of the recent terrorist attack in Garissa which killed 148 people.

The South African is 22-year-old Rolene Strauss, who was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest’s glitzy final in London last December.

The medical student at the University of the Free State, who is also Miss South Africa, cited insecurity as the reason for cancelling the trip, Monday Blues reports.

“We, the Miss World Kenya office regret to inform you that the dinner in hour of Miss World, which was to be held on April 10, 2015 has been postponed due to British travel advisory, which has been escalated by the Garissa terror attack. We will advise you as soon as we have the new date,” Terry Mungai, the CEO, Ashleys Ltd told Monday Blues via email.

TRAVEL ADVISORY

But why is a South African relying on UK travel advisory to determine her schedule? Well, according to her Wikipedia page, after winning the title, Strauss decided she would be based in England for her activities.

But even as Strauss cancels her trip to Kenya, US president Barack Obama has reiterated that he would still visit Kenya in July despite the attack.

Reports attributed to the White House said Obama ‘looks forward to meeting with President Kenyatta again in Nairobi in July,”

“The two leaders will discuss how to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation and continue to work together to build a safer and more prosperous future for Kenya and the broader region.”
