Ministry rules out ranking of schools in KCSE results

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang on Monday ruled out the ranking of schools in the KCSE examination results to be released Tuesday.

Prof Kipsang said the results of the students of technical colleges who sat their exams last year would also be released.

He said ranking of schools had affected performance and encouraged students to engage in irregularities.

“Students should do the exams and pass naturally. Let them be children who can learn instead of being grilled to pass examinations,” he said.

He spoke on Monday during the handover of Ugenya Teachers’ Training College to the National Government.

The PS, however, maintained that the ministry was still open to debate on the contentious issue, which has been opposed by parents and teachers’ unions.

“The ministry will sit with all stakeholders and discuss merit tools to be used besides examinations,” he said.

The KCSE exam results will be released less than two weeks after the High Court confirmed the Kenya National Examinations Council’s power to cancel results without giving any reasons.

Prof Kipsang advised schools to rank their children in all co-curricular activities such as sports, drama and music.

He said the ministry planned to make a major curriculum review to ensure international standards were met.

“The curriculum should be reviewed every five years, but the country has not done so in the last 12 years,” he said.
