Migori MCAs plan Sh5.8m Dubai trip to learn waste disposal

Some members of Migori county assembly have opposed a scheduled tour to Dubai by 13 members from Sunday which is said will cost the taxpayer Sh5.8 million.

The trip has been described as an educational tour for MCAs to learn about waste disposal mechanisms.

Kakrao ward representative Joe Gucha said the trip is misplaced and not relevant to the people of Migori.

Mr Gucha said the aspect of waste disposal mechanism does not even exist in the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP).

He argued that foreign trips are not a necessity to a county assembly that faces financial crisis.

“In our county integrated development plan, wastage disposal mechanism is not reflected anywhere and that is why the trip is misplaced,” said Mr Gucha.

He said there are many bills pending in the county assembly that cannot be passed for lack of money, yet funds have quickly been availed for the trip.

His sentiments were echoed by South Sakwa ward representative Jared Osawa who said county assembly workers have not been paid for the last two months for lack of money.

“It is unfortunate that Migori county assembly wants to spend millions of money on a trip that will not benefit the area and yet workers have not been paid for the last two months,” Mr Osawa said.

He said the assembly allocated a total of Sh5 Million for all foreign trips this financial year and it is shocking that just one foreign trip has exhausted the entire allocation.

The county assembly public relations office insists the trip had been cancelled.
