MCA threatens to ‘curse’ those meddling in Mwea land issue

A Member of County Assembly from Makueni county has sensationally threatened to invoke a curse on people he accuses of meddling in the controversial Mwea Settlement Scheme.

Mr Francis Mutungi (Kathonzweni) said kithitu, the dreaded Kamba curse, was one of the ways of resolving injustices.

Addressing residents of the Mwea settlement scheme at Gikuru Primary School, the MCA said the curse would affect people meddling in the affairs of the controversial 42,000 acre land.

Mr Mutungi said he had decided to take such drastic measure after complaints from residents that majority of them missed out during recent issuance of title deeds by the Embu government.

He claimed to have invoked kithitu curse on an administrator in Kibwezi who he claimed was engaging in illegal sand harvesting.

THE CURSE

“I invoked the curse and after the seventh day, the administrator died. This is not child play. We have laws that we follow. We have a Kamba constitution that guides on how various issues should be resolved.

Kithitu is one of the ways. Any person who infringes the right of residents will die and leave the land without it benefiting him. You can arrest us but you can’t arrest the Kamba customs,” said Mr Mutungi.

He ordered the hundreds of residents to remove a piece of cloth and wave it in the air, drop it and then spat on declaring the curse effective.

The MCA, however, appealed to residents not to have sex after the exercise so as to ensure it was effective.

Mbeere South MP Mutava Musyimi who was present sat pensively and did not comment on the curse.

Mr Musyimi who is an ordained clergy however urged residents to resist any move to survey the land saying the act was illegal.
