Mathare MP to serve pending Supreme Court ruling

Mathare MP George Mike Wanjohi will remain in office for an additional three weeks when the Supreme Court will deliver its judgement on a petition challenging his victory

The Supreme Court was on Wednesday scheduled to give its interpretation of the judgement issued by the Court of Appeal on March 18 that threw Mr Wanjohi out.

But  Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, on behalf of the Supreme Court judges, pushed the delivery of the judgement to April 29. He explained that the Mathare petition had brought weighty matters which the court felt it had not gotten enough time to read and interpret.

The High Court last year had thrown out a petition filed by ODM candidate Steven Kariuki only for the petitioner to proceed to the Court of Appeal which nullified the election of Mr Wanjohi.

Mr Wanjohi will in the interim continue serving as Mathare MP with all the privileges accorded to legislators until the Supreme Court makes its ruling.

The extension of the stay was good music to Mr Wanjohi who said he had faith in the Judiciary’s ability to dispense the matter expeditiously.

“I will still wait for the day the ruling will be done. Until then, I will continue serving Mathare people,” Mr Wanjohi said.

But his opponent, Mr Kariuki said the delay was suspicious.

“We want to go for fresh elections. The courts are taking too long . The truth will come out,” said Mr Kariuki.
