Matatus to go cashless, are you ready?
Matatus will, starting tomorrow (Monday), be expected to go cashless with commuters expected to pay bus fare using cards.
The National Transport Safety Authority Director General Francis Meja says the migration to the cashless payment system is still on.
“On Monday, all public transport vehicles will be expected to have gone cashless,” Meja said.
Stakeholders in the industry, however, still want more time before the system is adopted.
DEADLINE NOT FEASIBLE
Matatu Welfare Association Chairman Dickson Mbugua said the deadline is not feasible and not attainable for most vehicles.
“Ample time needs to be given to commuters and those in the matatu industry to prepare and tackle all the challenges that come with the change,” he said.
Mr Mbugua added that the association will be giving details at a press conference of why it is not in support of the move.
The deadline for the adoption of the cashless system by public service vehicles was put at December 01, 2014 by the NTSA and those who will not adopt it risk prosecution.
