Mariga goal steers Italian club to league victory

Kenyan midfielder McDonald Mariga celebrated a “truce” with his club coach by scoring in his team’s 3-0 victory over Avellino in a Serie B match at the Comunale Domenico Francioni Stadium on Saturday.

The former Inter Milan star found the back of the net for his second goal of the season in Latina FC colours, in ten appearances, with a long range effort following a well worked free kick from 30 plus yards.

Ghanaian striker Richmond Boakye and Luigi Scaglia were Latina’s other scorers.

Mariga, whose six-month contract with the second tier side lapses in June, hasn’t enjoyed play time since new coach Carmine Gautieri took over the reins at the start of March following Mario Somma’s sacking.

This situation led to a round of talks between the Kenyan, his manager and the club’s technical bench earlier this week, which in turn might have earned him a starting position with the team on Saturday.

The goal will certainly boost Mariga’s confidence as the 28 year old seemingly getting back to his best after a prolonged spell on the sidelines.
