Why many Kenyans want to know ‘How to calculate safe days’


The late Diana Chemutai, a popular secular Kalenjin musician also known as Chelele, was the most trending search in the month of January, according to the latest Google Search Trends.

Chelele was found dead in her Kapkwen home on Saturday, January 9.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was the second most trending search after the release of its sh45 billion plan for the 2017 general election.

The Commission was also a keen point of interest for Kenyans as they went online to find out available jobs, ahead of next year’s polls.

EL-ADDE ATTACK

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) was the third most trending search. The KDF piqued the interest of Kenyans after the Al-Shabaab terror group attacked its camp in El-Adde, in Gedo Somalia, killing an unknown number of soldiers.

Fourth on the list of most trending searches was the FA Cup – an annual knockout cup competition in English football as fans went online to find out more about the competition’s match schedule, fixtures and results.

English singer and songwriter, David Bowie, appeared on the list as the fifth most trending search in the month of January.

Other trending searches were: Salim Junior, born Paul Mwangi,  a popular Mugithi singer who died on January 23rd; Robert Mugabe after rumors of his death surfaced online after he had allegedly  suffered a heart attack, collapsed and died in Singapore; Netflix Kenya – after the American multinational provider of on-demand internet streaming media announced that it was now available in Kenya; Prezzo – after his interview with KTN’s Betty Kyalo on Friday, January 8; and Alan Rickman – an English actor and director known for his role as professor Severus Snape in Harry Potter – after he died on Thursday, January 14.

CURIOUS KENYANS

The “What is” category was driven by curious Kenyans, who went online to find out the answers to some of their burning questions.

What is Netflix?’ was the most trending question after the American streaming company announced its presence in Kenya; ‘what is the mountain of butterflies?’ after Google released its first doodle of the year celebrating the mountain of butterflies, a haven for butterflies that was first discovered 41 years ago in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico, by a group of Canadian zoologists.

Third on the list of the most trending ‘How to’ was ‘what is the best site for football predictions?’ while ‘what is loan exposure?’ and ‘what is first aid?’ were the fourth and fifth most trending questions.

Other trending ‘what is’ questions were: ‘What is call barring?’; ‘What is apple in French?’; ‘what is encryption?’; ‘what is wifi?’ and ‘what is TB?’.

SAFE DAYS

In the ‘How to’ category, the dominant trending search was ‘How to calculate safe days’ featured as the number one search. This shows the growing interest in use of alternative birth control measures in the country.

How to write a good CV’ was second on the list. This possibly links to the recurring hunt for job opportunities.

Other trending ‘How to’ searches were: ‘How to decorate a bedroom’; ‘How to cook broccoli’; ‘How to use quickbooks’; ‘How to write a letter’; ‘How to set a table’; ‘How to nurture and nourish the soul’; ‘How to talk to a girl you like’ and ‘How to make an app’.
