Police have arrested a 45-year-old man who reportedly stabbed his mother-in-law to death at Gichiengo village, Lari in Kiambu County.

Mr George Nderu is said to have tried to commit suicide by taking poison after the Tuesday incident, which has been linked to a domestic row.

Mr Nderu, who is a worker at a primary school in Ndeiya, Limuru, is said to have visited his in-laws home in search of his wife, who had left their matrimonial home following a dispute.

Witnesses said when Mr Nderu, who is currently recovering at Tigoni Hospital, arrived at the home, he was  welcomed by the deceased identified as Rahab Njeri, 83.

POOL OF BLOOD

At the time, there were visitors at Ms Njeri’s house, but when she ushered her son in-law to the living room, they left. Even before they had gone too far, they heard her screaming, prompting them and neighbours to rush back to the home.

Before they arrived, Mr Nderu, it was reported, had already killed the granny and fled.

“When we arrived at the home, we found Ms Njeri lying in a pool of blood,” said Mr Joseph Kamau, a neighbour.

Uplands police boss Isaiah Odhiambo said they trailed the suspect to his home at Ngarariga.

The police, he said noticed stench of a chemical substance smelling from him mouth, promoting them to rush him to Tigoni Hospital for treatment, after they suspected he had attempted to commit suicide.

Mr Odhiambo said police have launched investigations into the matter.
