Man to serve 10 years in jail for raping 80-year-old granny

A man who raped and injured an 80-year-old deaf grandmother in Kangaru village, Embu county one year ago, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

Mr David Njiru, 50, was found guilty of committing the offence on July 24, 2016 inside a maize plantation, an act that left the grandmother traumatized, and nursing a bruised forehead and private parts.

He was also faced an alternative charge of committing an indecent act by touching the woman’s private parts during the incident.

While making the sentence, Embu Senior Resident Magistrate Samuel Mutai said the five witnesses who testified in the case had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the man committed the heinous act.

Mr Njiru was however given 14 days to appeal the sentence.

The court heard harrowing accounts of how the man, who hails from Mbuvori village, ambushed the granny as she fetched firewood, grabbed her from the back and forced to the ground before raping her.

ANGRY MOB

Two women who were passing nearby heard the victim’s muffled cries and went to investigate, scaring off the rapist who had already pinned her to the ground.

The man took off but the mob caught up with him and beat him up and almost lynched him.

Police officer from the nearby Kangaru patrol unit, arrived on the scene and rescued the suspect who had been doused with petrol by the angry mob.

The police arrested the man who was unconscious and took him to the Embu Level Five hospital where his victim was also treated and discharged.

“I saw him running away from the maize plantation. His trousers zip was opened and the woman was lying on the ground with her clothes soiled. She was bleeding on her forehead,” said Ms Jemima Wambui, a witness.

Dr Phyllis Muhonja who testified during the case confirmed that the woman had been raped and narrated how she was taken to the hospital while in shock.
