Malls: Nairobians now spoilt for choice

In Nairobi, high-end shopping malls and exclusive residentials are coming up fast and furious. After the launch of Thika Road Mall early this year, final touches are being made on the Lavington Shopping Mall.

Various developers are also setting up ambitious real-estate projects involving multi-storeyed malls. They include NextGen, Garden Estate, Buffalo Mall, Britam and Hub Karen.

Fun and mingling

Residents are already spoilt for choice with the existing shopping malls including The Junction, Prestige and Greenhouse Malls on Ngong Road, The Mall and Sarit Centre in Westlands, Mountain Mall on Thika Road, Galleria in Karen, T-Mall on Lang’ata Road and Greenspan in Eastlands.

The high number of shopping malls has been attributed to the expanding middle class consumers increasingly adopting expatriate tastes and lifestyles.

The retail stores, on the other hand, are taking advantage of the changes in consumers’ spending habits largely driven by peer pressure, time consciousness, security and ease in business transaction.

“The beauty of malls is that I can do all my shopping in one place and while at it, have lunch or dinner with a friend,” says Nancy Kimotho, a South B resident.

For the young generation, malls come with fun, and mingling.

“Malls have provided opportunities for investors and we are seeing more international brands, previously a preserve of the rich, being brought closer to the people,” says Catherine Ado, Marketing Manager Dunhill Consulting Limited – the TRM management group.
