Major roads in Nairobi to be closed for UN conference


Nairobi County traffic department has released a list of roads in Nairobi which will be closed during the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that began on Saturday at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The conference, which will run from July 16 to 22, will see several roads in the CBD partially or completely closed beginning on Sunday 17, July 2016 to Friday 22, July 2016.

Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue, Taifa Road and City Hall Way will be closed for the entire period of the conference while Standard Street, Mama Ngina Street and Webera Street will be closed on certain days.

The police have advised motorists to use diversions that they have given as alternatives. Motorists heading to and out of the city centre through Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue, Taifa Road and City Hall Way will be required to use Haile Selassie Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue and University Way.

DIVERSIONS

Heavy commercial vehicles, trailers and articulated vehicles bound for Rift Valley region will be diverted at Mombasa road to use the Southern Bypass to Kikuyu for Nakuru.

All other vehicles approaching the Red Zone will also be diverted into other roads such as Haile Selassie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Moi Avenue and Kimathi Street and proceed to their destination as planned.

A total of 23 heads of state and 7,000 delegates are expected to attend the 14th session of the UNCTAD which will bring together heads of state and government, ministers and prominent players in the business world, civil society and academia to tackle global trade and economic development issues.

The conference, which takes place after every four years, was last held in Nairobi in May, 1976. Other African countries that have played hosts to the conference include Ghana (2008) and South Africa (1996).
