M-pesa to reverse erroneous airtime purchases

Safaricom customers who erroneously buy airtime from M-Pesa can now reverse the transaction and get a full refund.

The telecom firm has quietly introduced the reversal service, offering relief to subscribers who mistakenly buy airtime instead of sending or withdrawing money from the mobile money service.

To reverse erroneous transactions, affected subscribers are required to get in touch with Safaricom’s customer care representatives through either Twitter of Facebook.

The airtime will be credited back into the subscriber’s M-Pesa account within 12 hours.

“Do not use the erroneously purchased airtime as that will affect the reversal,” the telecom firm says in a blog post published on its website.

Previously, subscribers who unknowingly bought airtime instead of withdrawing or sending money had to use the cash for calling, SMS or data purchase, a costly affair if the transaction was in thousands of shillings.

Another option for affected subscribers was to try and sell off the airtime, another taxing undertaking.
