Nairobi’s Light Academy has been crowned winners of the sixth edition of the Great Debaters Contest.

The school, which was pitted against 10 other schools from across the country, received Sh250,000 prize money.

Their closest rivals Nyeri High School walked away with Sh50,000. Mbooni Girls was the third runner up.

Speaking during the award ceremony, Communications Authority Director General Francis Wangusi commended the schools for participating in the competition and urged them to leverage ICT to embrace knowledge.

“The best debater is not a noisemaker but that one who has researched far and wide. ICT is a channel that is going to help you overcome the challenges you had in gaining knowledge. I urge you to use the ICT space to enrich yourself with knowledge,” said Mr Wangusi.

On her part, Arimus Media Chief Executive Officer Julie Gichuru, congratulated the winners for their efforts in voicing their opinions on sustainable development, which was the theme throughout the season.

“This has been an exciting season, we have learnt a lot on how to tackle youth unemployment and poverty in Kenya. GDC aims to provide youth with a platform through which they can participate in peacebuilding, national development and self-actualization,” noted Ms Gichuru.

Other schools that participated in the finals included St Marys Yala, Meru School, Malindi High School, Mary leaky Girls High School and Metkei Girls High School.
