Singer Bahati loses partnership over ‘explicit’ content

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has canceled a Sh200,000 partnership with gospel singer Kevin Bahati.

The vocal KFCB CEO Ezekiel Mutua explained the move was necessitated after the singer posted videos that contravene their ‘clean content and partnership’ policy.

“This week @InfoKfcb cancelled over 200k cash and other kind support to musician @BahatiKenya following the posting of videos which contravened our clean content and partnership policy. As a result, our team decided to cancel the support and disassociate completely with the planned event,” Mutua tweeted.

Mutua further added that Bahati approached the Board for support and had committed to being a clean content ambassador.

The KFCB boss further notes Kenyan artists have gone to extremes of promoting explicit content at the expense of tainting their brand and denting their careers.

“My heart breaks at seeing our artists going to extremes to promote explicit content even at the expense of tainting their brand and denting their careers,” he added.

Mutua further said that clean, family-suitable content is more marketable and sustainable than dirty content.

“We are not in any way asking artists to create gospel or only one genre of content, but like the writer of this article avers, there’s need for a jab of moderation and modesty,” he said.

Last week Bahati released a new single, Fikra Za Bahati, mainly shot in a casino where he occasionally puffs on a cigar.

In the video, Bahati takes jabs at fellow artists ranging from Sauti Sol to Ringtone.
