Namugongo Catholic Shrine closed for renovation

Namugongo Catholic Shrine has been sealed off for redevelopment ahead of Pope Francis visit in November.

According to Mr Francis Mwonge, the shrine’s administrative secretary, the shrine will be re-opened in early November.

“It is true the shrine has been closed to give room for renovation. We had planned to redevelop the area sometime before but it happened a couple of months ahead of the Pope’s visit,” he said, adding that Mass will be held at Namugongo Girls Primary School.

“The Archbishop of Kampala, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, handed over the site to Roko Construction Company Ltd a couple of days ago and works have begun,” Mr Mwonge noted.

The redevelopment of the shrines will cost Shs44 billion and will involve expanding the pavilion and lift in the alter.

Mr Mwonge said the Catholic Church Episcopal Conference had set up five committees to organise for the Pope’s visit.
