Lung patient can now walk unaided after Kenyans donated Sh7 million

A lung patient who melted hearts on social media with her struggle to stay alive is recovering well and can now walk unaided.

Gladys Kamande received Sh7 million from Kenyans who supported her online funds drive to repair her collapsed lungs.

Ms Kamande has for the last six years been surviving on oxygen cylinders that she walked with everywhere.

Her life changed in 2010 after developing a growth in her stomach and had to go for an operation. Twelve surgeries later, she lost her eyesight and her lungs collapsed.

But she can now walk unaided after specialists at Kenyatta National Hospital intervened.

Ms Kamande’s latest health update was shared on Facebook by Ndungu Nyoro who led the funds drive that met its Sh7 million target within days.

The specialists at Kenyatta National Hospital have helped link the family to an Indian specialist in respiratory illnesses and have given her a go ahead to travel.

She is finalizing on her travel plans to seek treatment in India.

“Hopefully by Monday next week, Gladys Kamande will be seeking specialized treatment in a foreign country but with faith she will finally do away with all the equipment she’s been carrying around,” wrote Nyoro.
