Love triangle: Man kills wife, attempts suicide twice, then surrenders to police

A 25 year-old man in Trans Nzoia surrendered to police on Sunday evening after he allegedly hacked his wife to death with an axe over a love triangle.

The suspect, Anthony Karanja, is reported to have killed his wife, Esther Wangui, 23, in their rented house at Mitume Usafi village, in Matisi location over love triangle in the 7:30 am incident.

The suspect is said to have surrendered to the Officer in Charge of Trans Nzoia West police Station (OCS) while shouting “nimemmaliza nendeni mumchukue“.

He alleged that his wife was infuriated by a love message she saw in his phone which triggered a heated argument between the two.

“During the argument the suspect picked a knife and stabbed her several times on the chest, both legs and on the thighs,” Mr Jackson Mwenga, Trans Nzoia West OCPD said.

The suspect later finished his wife by hacking her on top of the head using an axe.

Mr Mwenga said that according to neighbours the couple had just arrived home moments before the heinous act.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

After the incident, the suspect tried to commit suicide by taking ‘Red Cat’ poison but it failed to take effect.

He then opted to hang himself only to land on the floor of their house after the rope snapped.

“Our officers visited the scene accompanied by the suspect who showed them his house and handed over the keys to the house whose door was locked using a padlock,” said Mr Mwenga.

In the house, the body on the bed had deep cuts on the chest, both thighs and on the head.

Also found were a blood stained knife and an axe, five rolls of bhang, a sachet of “Red Cat” poison and a rope under the bed.

The body was removed to Kitale county referral hospital mortuary.

The suspect is being held at Kitale police station waiting to be arraigned in court in connection with the murder.

This comes after a 25 year old man died on Friday after he self – immolated following an argument with his girlfriend over late night call she had received from another man.
