Lets support local sports in honour of Fidel – Kalonzo

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has urged Kenyans to rally their support behind various sports activities in the country as a befitting tribute to Fidel Odinga.

While addressing mourners during a requiem service for the departed son of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at the All Saints Cathedral on Thursday afternoon, Musyoka added that the departure of the 41 year old was a big blow to both the deceased immediate family and the country as a whole.

“I am sure our departed brother (Fidel) would be the happiest and satisfied if we offered most of our support to local teams such as Harambee Stars and Sofapaka,” the former Vice President said.

Kalonzo was responding to a tribute at the same occasion from CORD co-Principal and Senator Moses Wetangula who told mourners that his last moments with Fidel was on New Year’s day, when the duo together with Raila watched two English Premier League games; Southampton’s 2-0 win over Arsenal and Tottenham’s 5-3 hammering over Chelsea.

The late Fidel who died suddenly at his home in Karen, Nairobi on Sunday morning, was a passionate local sports lover and supporter, a gesture confirmed through his generous contribution towards the activities of Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia, and local rugby club Kisumu RFC, an institution he chaired.

Fidel’s mother, Ida, also emphasized her late son’s love for sports at the same function, while narrating to the gathered mourners of how she would consistently get worried when her son would go to the stadium to watch the Kenyan football derby involving AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia – a fixture infamous for hooliganism.

Fidel will be laid to rest in Bondo, Siaya County on Saturday.
