Legislator accused of assaulting female MP arrested in day of drama

Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has been arrested at Parliament Police Station and taken to Kileleshwa Police Station.

This follows claims that he sent an abusive text message to nominated MP Sara Korere, a day after she accused him of assaulting her inside Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery’s office.

Mr Lempurkel allegedly sent the SMS to Ms Korere at 5pm on Tuesday moments after he allegedly slapped her and stepped on her stomach.

The message, which Ms Korere with the help of her female MP colleagues have reported to the police, threatened her to withdraw the case against him or she will die.

INSULTS

The message, which allegedly includes insults such as “idiot” and “prostitute” was read out verbatim by Nairobi Woman Rep Rachel Shebesh at a press conference at Parliament Buildings.

The Nairobi News cannot reproduce the lewd message for legal reasons.

At the press conference, female MPs demanded Mr Nkaissery and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to take action against the MP.

Mr Lempurkel has since alleged he was the one who was attacked. Sources said Mr Lempurkel spent the better part of Tuesday at a top hospital in a Nairobi hospital for checkups where he was also bandaged.
