KRU names Muthee’s successor

By DAVID KWALIMWA December 18th, 2014 1 min read

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) board has appointed Gabriel Ouko as the body’s acting Chairman. Ouko replaces Mwangi Muthee who, together with two directors Godwin Karuga and Maurice Masiga , resigned from their roles this week.

Ouko, who will continue serving as the Union’s treasurer, is expected to hold brief until next March – which is the expected lapse of Muthee’s tenure.

“The Board at a meeting held on 17th December 2014, unanimously appointed Mr. Gabriel Ouko as Chairman of the Union and shall serve out the remainder of the term – until the next Annual General Meeting which shall be held before the 31st March 2015. Mr. Ouko shall also continue to discharge his duties as the Hon. Treasurer of the Union,” a statement signed by Secretary General Eddie Omondi read.

IMMEDIATE PRIORITY

The statement also emphasized the immediate priority of the patched up union’s members will be to improve on the fortunes of the national sevens team, to ensure it remains a core member of the IRB World Series and qualify for the  Olympic Games in 2016.

The Board is also seeking to recruit a Chief Executive Officer and Chief Finance Officer early next year.

Ouko is said to have beaten KRU Vice Chairman Phillip Jalang’o to this role, during an intense behind the scenes lobbying that included other interested candidates.

The Union officials have in the meantime dismissed reports of corruption and possible mismanagement of funds, as highlighted in the Muthee’s resignation letter.
