Kin of dead city lawyer killed in crash

Three relatives of a lawyer who was found dead in a swimming pool at a Mombasa hotel perished on Tuesday night in an accident at Salgaa on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

The lawyer’s cousin, his wife and their three-year-old daughter were travelling to Nairobi from Siaya, where they had attended the burial of Geoffrey Oriaro, when the accident occurred.

Rift Valley Provincial Traffic Enforcement Officer Mary Omari said Mr Patrick Ochieng and his wife Ms Rose Akoth died on the spot, while their daughter, who was found breathing and was rushed to the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital, was declared dead on arrival.

VEHICLES COLLIDED

Ms Omari said the vehicle carrying the family collided with a bus, which was taking passengers to Eldoret Wednesday morning.

“The accident occurred at about 12.30am and there were no casualties among the people in the bus,” said Ms Omari.

She said that the driver of the vehicle was overtaking when the collision occurred.

A taxi driver who took the girl to hospital said she was still alive when he left the scene of accident.

“She was groaning and calling for her mother before going quiet at some point. I got to the hospital, put her on a stretcher with the assistance of some health workers, but the doctor declared her dead,” said Mr John Kamau.

The stretch between the Njoro junction and Kamara on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway is a notorious black spot where many lives have been lost.

Most accidents involve trucks, buses and matatus.

Last month, a family of four, including a four-year-old boy, perished when a motorbike they were riding on was ran over by a truck at Kibunja.
