Kidero’s government owes suppliers Sh45 billion

Governor Evans Kidero’s government owes suppliers a whooping Sh 45 billion in outstanding balances.

On the flip side, the County government is owed in excess of Sh60 billion by various Parastals and institutions.

The shocking revelation was made on Tuesday by Nairobi County Secretary Lilian Ndegwa in a statement to newsrooms.

Ms Ndegwa explained that the debt was inherited from the City Council of Nairobi.

“The Nairobi City County government indeed owes suppliers a total of Sh45 billion in totality, out of which Sh44.9 billion was debt inherited from the defunct City Council of Nairobi,” Ms Ndegwa’s statement said.

THREE YEARS

She said the Kidero-led county government has devised ways of offsetting the colossal debt in the next three years.

“The NCCG (Nairobi City County Government) has put in place mechanisms to offset owed monies and we hope to clear the monies owed to be cleared in the next 3 years. These are debts inherited from the City Council of Nairobi,” she said.

Ms Ndegwa further explained that they were adhering to a moratorium placed by the Transitional Authority on old debts.

“The Transition Authority wrote to the NCCG an advisory that until they are through with their report on assets and liabilities, old debts are currently on hold.

“Affected  suppliers were therefore requested by the TA to register their debts with TA to enable them conduct their due diligence in conjunction with the County government,” said Ms Ndegwa.
