Kidero plans to administer Sh 11.7 billion fuel levy

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero now wants the Sh11.7 billion fuel levy to be administered by his government.

Dr Kidero says that out of the two billion litres of fuel, 1.3 liters are consumed in Nairobi, accounting for 65 per cent of the total consumption.

“This is why we are asking the national Government to consider transferring the Sh11.7 billion Fuel levy to the County Government because the issues raised here are operational in nature and within the county Government mandate,” Kidero said.

The governor spoke when he met with key stakeholders in the oil industry at a Nairobi hotel to explore ways of improving business environment in Nairobi City.

Dr Kidero says Nairobi County has the bulk of the infrastructure and service needs to deliver to the stakeholders in the City.

“80% of the money allocated for Nairobi County goes to paying wages and little is left for development,” said the governor.

OIL INDUSTRY

The stakeholders had sought audience with the governor to find solutions to issues affecting their business such as drainage, dilapidated roads, multiple licensing, control of illegal bus stops and stages, product adulteration and budget provisions affecting the oil industry.

Also in attendance was Nairobi County Police Commander Benson Kibui and Edward Kinyua, the acting director of Petroleum Energy Regulatory Commission, amongst others.

The governor stated that the process of decongesting Nairobi in order to ensure quick and smooth flow of operations in the city is going on well as stipulated in the released New Master Plan.

It is through the process of implementing the Master Plan that most of these issues are being addressed.

Mr Kibui assured the dealers of their full support in handling security related issues, regulatory matters such as fuel adulteration, licensing among other issues.
