Kidero told to apologise to Sonko for drugs claim

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has been given seven days to withdraw remarks in which he allegedly linked Senator Mike Sonko to drug dealing.

The governor might face a defamation suit if he does not apologise, said lawyers representing Mr Sonko.

In a demand notice issued by Mungatana and Company Advocates, the governor is accused of maligning the senator over the use of ambulances from the Sonko Rescue Team, which he allegedly claimed were being used to ferry drugs in the city.

Dr Kidero allegedly made the remarks while addressing a crowd in Mathare.

Mr Sonko says in the demand notice that Dr Kidero “defamed” him and that his words could be interpreted to mean that he (Sonko) “has questionable character and engages in criminal activities”.

The senator’s lawyers say that if an apology is not received within a week, a defamation suit will be filed against the governor.

Mr Sonko has been providing a wide range of philanthropic services to city residents, including free ambulances, fire disaster response teams, and also offering limousines for weddings.
