Kidero told to be ‘ruthless’ in getting titles for public school lands

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has been asked to ensure the county government has title deeds for all the public schools in the capital city in its custody.

Dr Kidero told the Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee that all public schools’ land belonged to the national government.

“After the promulgation of the constitution assets were supposed to follow resources, education was not devolved and all the resources under the sector went with the national government,” Kidero said.

Committee vice chairman Prof John Lonyangapuo (West Pokot) questioned why the national government took over parcels of land belonging to public schools but failed to inherit liabilities too.

“What happened with the decree by the State that all public primary schools have title deeds, Kidero you must be a bit ruthless when dealing with land matters to avoid private developers from taking over like the Lang’ata primary school case,” Prof Lonyangapuo said.

Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are asked the governor to make use of the ‘competent’ lawyers the county has hired to pursue cases of encroachment of public land.

“It is incumbent upon the county government to speed up the recovery of grabbed land by private developers,” Mr Mong’are said.
