Kidero slaps huge fines on revellers

Nairobi drinkers could be jailed or fined millions of shillings — or both — under tough new laws governing the sale of alcohol.

They ban the sale of alcohol to anyone already believed to be drunk or aged under 18.

And they also give the police and county askaris powers to arrest and prosecute anybody found drunk in public.

The Act states that anyone found by a police officer or a county askari to be drunk and/or disorderly in public can be arrested without warrant and faces up to three years in jail or a Sh500,00 fine or both.

The new rules crack down on bar owners too. They face jail and huge fines and could lose their livelihoods by having their licences revoked.
