Kidero issues fresh ultimatum to matatus

Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero has reiterated that all matatu’s should surrender their permits by April 6, 2016 for verification.

Speaking during a meeting with other stakeholders in the public transport industry on Friday morning, Dr Kidero said law and order must prevail in the city.

“In order for it to continue attracting investors and visitors, courtesy, observation of transport rules, cleanliness of vehicles and avoidance of noise pollution must be adhered to,” Kidero said.

The meeting resolved that promotion of equity on operations must be given room. All stakeholders agreed to implement the previous reports of decongestion of the city and transport sector.

The meeting also resolved to implement cross city routing while at the same time set up a working committee of the transport sector which will consist of National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Matatu Owners Association, Matatu Welfare Association, SACCO representatives and Cooperatives.

The Governor also added that there was need to develop a new public bus termini outside the CBD and reorganization of Sacco’s to make them bigger and stronger.

Nairobi County and the matatu operators have been at loggerheads since the governor ordered the cancellation of their permits, arguing that illegal matatu termini in the city centre had caused congestion and inconvenienced traders.

Others present in the meeting at City Hall that was chaired by Nairobi City County Deputy governor, Jonathan Mueke, were members of Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) Roads and Enforcement team, NTSA and matatu operators.
