Kidero demands for ‘accurate’ dead voters figure
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has poked holes into the KPMG report that revealed 92,272 dead people who should be immediately erased from voter register saying it was inaccurate.
Dr Kidero, who spoke on Sunday at Regina Caeli Catholic Church in Karen, said on average over 200 people die in Nairobi on a daily basis making it 72,000 a year which translates to 360,000 dead people hence the data from KMPG is inaccurate.
Dr Kidero said that in Nairobi alone over 300,000 people have died in five years hence he was surprised by the recently released numbers.
“In five years we should have probably lost 360,000 people in Nairobi alone of which 75 per cent are adult. I was surprised in the cleaning of voter register. We were expected about 3 million dead,” said Dr Kidero.
ACCURATE FIGURE
The governor said the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) should give an accurate figure and the audit reveal the names of those who have died and only the alive people will be allowed to vote.
He also urged the IEBC to conduct an audit on the voter register and rid it of ghost voters to deliver credible elections.
Dr Kidero further asked the commission to move with speed and come up with a genuine voters list to avert the possibility of rigging the presidential results.
“This time we do not want ghost voters to decide for us. I have closed Langata Cemetery and nobody will rise from the dead. I have also given a shoot to kill orders to the ghost leaving the cemetery heading to the polling station,” said Kidero.
IEBC is currently under immense pressure from the public to clear the voters register with less than two months left to the elections day.
GHOST VOTERS
Meanwhile, the Nasa flag bearer Raila Odinga’s wife Ida Odinga has warned the IEBC against allowing ghost voters in the voter register.
Speaking on Saturday when she met over 2000 women leaders in Nairobi County at Kilimani Primary School, Mrs Odinga also called on all relevant stakeholders to ensure everything is handled transparently to guarantee a level playing field for all candidates.
Mrs Odinga said this would be the last time she is asking women for their votes on behalf of her husband and that she will lead women across the country in protecting Mr Odinga’s votes.
“I’m back for the last time to beg for votes for Raila (Odinga) and talk to my fellow women who know the pain of giving birth,” she said.
“This time round women will not be left behind. In the tallying centres we will provide security and guard our votes. We will also adopt polling stations and stay there overnight to ensure our votes are safe,” she added.
The meeting was also attended by Nairobi Woman Rep candidates Esther Passaris (ODM) and Rahab Nbambuki (Wiper). Lawyer Edwin Sifuna, who is contesting the Nairobi Senate seat, also addressed the meeting.
