Kidero, Berlin mayor fail to strike deal on decongesting the city

Talks between Nairobi and Berlin officials on Wednesday failed to yield concrete plans to decongest the city.

Instead, the Berlin Mayor Michael Muller invited Governor Evans Kidero for further talks to negotiate a project-based partnership.

The Nairobi Governor had held a meeting with Mr Muller, targeting the Germans’ input in efforts to decongest the city.

During the session attended by journalists, Mr Muller said his city was willing to discuss a specific project rather than a blanket agreement on partnership.

INVITE TO BERLIN

“Our relations will be based on existing cooperation and I invite the governor to come visit Berlin so we can discuss projects on education, culture and economic policy,” Mr Muller said.

He did not, however, rule out helping decongest Nairobi through transport and traffic projects.

He said Berlin was particularly interested in environment policy.

Dr Kidero is pitching for a public transport system that will bring order to the city.

The governor said he was impressed by the German system when he visited Berlin in September 2014 and would like the same replicated in Nairobi.
