Kibera women in court for pelting Kenya Power team with stones

Two women from Kibera were on Monday charged with creating disturbance following their attempt to stop Kenya Power employees from disconnecting illegal electricity connections in the area.

The two, Eunice Atieno and Lillian Akinyi, initially pleaded guilty to the offence before Kibera resident magistrate Charles Ondieki.

In mitigation they claimed that they mistook the Kenya Power team for thieves.

Ms Akinyi however later claimed that the team had attacked them.

“We resorted to throwing stones at them in self-defence,” she said.

She claimed the Kenya Power employees arrested her when she went to rescue her colleague.

The claim changed her plea from guilty to not guilty.

“Your explanation changes your plea. We will have to hear witnesses,” Magistrate Ondieki ruled.

The two were released on sh20,000 bond each.  The case will be mentioned on July 12.
