Kenyans spending six hours on Facebook every day – survey

Kenyans are spending more than six and a half hours surfing the web on their smartphones every day, a survey by Facebook has showed.

On average, the 5.2 million monthly Facebook users in Kenya spend six hours and 38 minutes daily on the Internet, said the head of Facebook for Africa Nunu Ntshingila on Thursday in an interview.

Statistics by the social media company showed that the top three times that users log in are mostly at home, before going to bed and when commuting.

Facebook records more than 2.5 million Kenyan users daily, 96 per cent accessing the platform on their mobile devices.

A survey released by the Aga Khan University in January showed that Facebook and Whatsapp were among the most popular social media networks among the Kenyan youth.

The same survey indicated that more than 50 per cent of the youth population spent time online, with 12 per cent being constantly online.

The increase in users on social media has prompted technology firms including Facebook and Twitter to generate revenue from sponsored pages and messages.

According to Facebook, more than 63 per cent of people on Facebook users in Kenya visit pages connected to small or medium-sized businesses.

The social media network has more than three million businesses actively advertising on it and more than 50 million small businesses using free Pages on the platform.
