Kenyan whiz at math emerges top globally in IGCSE – PHOTOS
Manraj Singh, 17, has been ranked the best student in Mathematics worldwide in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations 2016.
The examinations are administered to over 150,000 students in the world with about 156 countries who administer the curriculum.
The student from Melvin Jones School in Nakuru town said he was elated when he found he had also topped the country in the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards Kenya.
VERY HAPPY
“I was very happy because now I can get a scholarship to pursue medicine at university,” said Singh during an interview on Monday.
The 12th grader aspires to be a surgeon.
In Kenya, Singh was the best in Computer Science, Accounting, Additional Mathematics and Mathematics .
Other schools have attempted to entice him with scholarships but Singh says he is happy at his school and has no wish to transfer.
FULL SCHOLARSHIP
His school, sponsored by the Lions Club, has given him a full scholarship for the next two years.
He said his biggest supporter is his mother, Ms Dhilaon Kavita.
“I knew he would top the world in mathematics so when it happened I was obviously very happy,” said Ms Kavita who is also a teacher at Melvin Jones.
Kenya scooped 72 awards in the Cambridge International A Level rewards worldwide, with Melvin Jones School scooping ten of them.
