Kenyan team turns down substandard accommodation in Rwanda

The national men volleyball team on Friday rejected the accommodation provided to them by their hosts in Kigali terming it as being “substandard”.

The team is in Rwanda to compete in the Zone V All Africa Games Qualifiers.

The three day event begins on Saturday evening with coach Geoffrey Omondi’s charges primed to line up against perceived minnows Burundi.

Upon arrival by air from Nairobi on Friday evening, the Kenyan contingent was supposed to check in at the New Hello’s Corner Hotel but team manager Iguanya Ndirangu would hear none of that moments after inspecting the facility.

“The rooms are smelling fresh paint and the sewage pipes are leaking, the beds are also very short and that will inconvenience our players who are tall.” Iguanya told Nairobi News.

OPENING FIXTURE

The team instead opted for the Hilltop hotel.

In the meantime, the Kenya Volleyball Federation has drafted in Kenya Prisons right attacker Ibrahim Oduor as probable replacement for captain Phillip Maiyo.

Maiyo, who plays for Al Arabi in Qatar, will miss Kenya’s opening fixture of this competition against Burundi, because of club commitments.

He could however be available to feature in Kenya’s other fixtures against Uganda and hosts Rwanda depending on his travel itinerary from Doha to Kigali on Saturday evening, and his fitness levels upon arrival.

Kenya is gunning for the sole qualification berth in this Zone to the All Africa Games that will take place in Congo Brazzaville, starting June.
