Kenya Cup topwigs in big victories
Strathmore Leos and Mwamba take a Christmas break on a high when they crushed Nondescripts and Kenya Harlequin respectively in their sixth leg outing of Kenya Cup rugby league.
It’s Mwamba, who turned on the style, subjecting Quins to a further see-saw season, with a 21-19 defeat on Friday night at Impala Sports Club.
Back row Tony Owuor scored a brace of tries as Strathmore Leos notched five tries to maul Nondies 31-0 at the Impala Sports Club on Saturday.
Fly half Lavin Asego converted one of the tries by second centre Greg Odhiambo and first centre Bradley Owako before slotting over three penalties to spur Mwamba to their fifth win of the season.
Champions Nakuru also upheld their winning ways scoring five tries with two from Philip Owuor to down hosts Impala 31-13 at the same venue.
Other scorers for Strathmore against Nondies, who had previously lost to Quins 14-18, were winger Cyprian Kuto , Frank Wanyama and substitute Brian Nyikuli. Fly half Ken Andola made three conversions in a match that Leos led 12-0 at the drinks.
BONUS POINT VICTORY
The results had Strathmore retain their clean run of one point lead with their sixth consecutive bonus point victory improving their tally to 30 points.
“Everything has been good as we are enjoying good form by virtue of wining all our six outings with bonus points heading into the second leg,” said Strathmore coach Mitch Ocholla. “ But we shall needed to change the gear in January to adjust to championship mood.”
Martin Owila, Sammy Warui and David Kivuchi also scored a try apiece for Nakuru for their fifth bonus point to stay second and undefeated with 29 points.
Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) also condemned host Western Bulls to a 31-6 defeat at Kakamega High school grounds.
The bankers also earned a bonus point to stay third with 28 points and as the only other team besides Strathmore and Nakuru yet to concede in the first phase of the league.
Kabra Sugar also stayed fifth but improved their tally to 21 points after dispatching host Mean Machine 41-3 at the University of Nairobi grounds.
Homeboyz were big winners as they recovered from Mwamba’s 10-20 defeat to crush Catholic Universoty Monks 76-5 at the University of Nairobi grounds.
