Kenya 7s team lifts Challenge Trophy in Wellington
Kenya redeemed itself at the Wellington Sevens leg of the IRB Sevens World Series by clinching the Challenge Trophy on Sunday.
Shujaa upped their game on the second day of the tournament after a poor showing on the first day by overwhelming Russia 24-5 in the Challenge Trophy quarters before beating USA 19-12 in the semis to set up a final date with Australia whom they stunned 19-17.
Kenya claimed a rare win over Australia after 15 defeats in a row, and all-time world top-try scorer Collins Injera was happy with the performance after returning to the team for the first time this season.
SERIES STANDINGS
“We wanted to keep our focus, Australia are a quality side. We stood up and got the win. Today was very windy, the toughest I have had here since my debut in 2006,” Injera said.
The win earned Kenya eight more points and the team is now jointly in eighth place in the series standings with 25 points alongside Australia and Argentina.
Meanwhile, Kenya has been drawn against Wellington Sevens Main Cup winners South Africa, England and Japan in Pool A for the fourth leg of the series Sydney, Australia next month.
