Kenya 7s light up social media after historic win

In the wake of the national sevens team’s historic victory at Singapore Sevens, Kenyans on Sunday evening took to social media to celebrate the team’s success at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

The star-studded outfit, coached by Benjamin Ayimba with Andrew Amonde as captain, tore bigwigs Fiji into shreds on their way to a stunning 30-7 win in a one-sided final.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto led in paying tribute to the team for their heroics in Singapore.

“Join me in congratulating the Kenya Sevens Rugby Team on their remarkable win against Fiji in the Singapore Sevens Cup rugby finals,” Kenyatta wrote on Twitter where the hashtag #Kenya7s was trending for the better part of the evening.

Deputy President William Ruto tweeted: “Hongera #KenyaSevens for making history by winning their first ever series title at the 2016 #Singapore7s”

HISTORIC PERFORMANCE

Other prominent personalities who appreciated the team’s historic performance included Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, media personalities, corporate institutions, sports lovers and excited Kenyans on Twitter (KOT).

Odinga said: “Outstanding performance by @Kenya7s! Flying the Kenyan flag high and around,”

Mutunga, meanwhile, challenged local politicians to take tips from the “unity and patriotism” of the Sevens team stars in his tweet.

Alongside a picture of the players huddled together, the Chief Justice posed: “Are our politicians watching this expression unity and patriotism,”

Wario also shared his congratulation note moments after the result stating: “Congratulations to Kenya7s for making history; winning our first ever series title in #Singapore. We are totally proud of you. Kudos.”

Ayimba’s charges, thus, join the national women volleyball team as the only sides to have triumphed at an international event – a statistic that further highlights Kenya’s potential as a sporting powerhouse.
