KCSE: 144,033 candidates qualify for university placement
A total of 893 candidates who sat the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) attained a mean grade of A Plain while 143,140 scored C+ and above guaranteeing their placement in public universities in the country.
Education CS George Magoha said more boys than girls sat the examination at 50.9 percent and 49.9 percent respectively.
Prof Magoha said there were no cancelled KCSE exam results and lauded the candidates for defying all odds, including the Covid-19 pandemic, to shine in their examinations.
However, this year the number of female candidates sitting the exam in delivery rooms went up to stand at 652, this the CS said might be attributed to the long closure of schools in March last year when the pandemic struck.
According to Prof Magoha, the highest number of candidates who sat their KCSE exam in the delivery room was recorded in Bungoma County.
In terms of counties and gender enrolment for KCSE, more girl candidates enrolled in Taita-Taveta, Nyeri, Kwale, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Machakos, Nandi, Vihiga, Embu among others.
Counties in which boys performed better than girls include Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Homa Bay.
“Our children have defied the Covid-19 pandemic to shine in their examinations. The 2020 candidates can now join institutions of higher learning, the effects of Covid-19 notwithstanding. A total of 747,161 candidates sat for the examinations. This is an increase from the year 2019 where 697,222 students sat for the exam,” said Prof Magoha.
He added that the 2021 KCSE examinations will be administered in March 2022.
