Kenneth Wathugi Karume, the grandson of the late Defence Minister, Njenga Karume, who is accused of pushing his girlfriend to her death from the fourth floor of an apartment two weeks ago, will be detained for another day before taking plea.

Making the application on Monday at the Kiambu Law Court, the investigating officer Senior Sergeant Gabriel Rotich said they were under instructions from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to continue Mr Wathugi at the Kiambu Police Station.

Rotich said that the ten-day investigation period ordered by the court had ended but requested for a day to facilitate further investigations into the case, in which Wathugi is accused of killing Ms Victoria Wairimu.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Justus Kituku, Wathugi, 30, has been linked to the murder of Wairimu on the night of Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Gracia Apartments in Ndumberi, Kiambu County.

FATAL FALL

In a sworn affidavit, Senior Sergeant Rotich asked Kiambu Principal Magistrate Kituku to extend the accused’s detention by a day before he formally takes plea.

The court heard that Wathugi was in the company of the deceased for a night of partying before retreating to their apartment.

The prosecution led by State Counsel Henry Kinyanjui told the court that Wairimu was pushed off the balcony of their fourth floor apartment to her death.

Wairimu sustained several injuries on her limbs, head and back after the fatal fall.

According to witnesses, there was commotion at the victim’s house with Wairimu shouting for help before she went silent. The accused will take plea on Tuesday April 12, 2016.
