KAA, Uber working on solution for passengers at airports

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and the ride-hailing app Uber are working on a solution to them allowed to pick and drop off passengers at their airports.

KAA on Tuesday issued a statement after an Uber driver was clamped at the airport and the driver accused of “illegally” picking customers from the airport.

“KAA is in discussions with other non-airport registered taxi service providers to establish a commercial arrangement that is similar to the existing arrangement with the registered providers to officially allocate them space to wait and pick up their customers at our airports,” the statement read in part.

KAA acknwoldged recipt of complaints about the alleged harassment of Uber drivers at the JKIA in Nairobi, and Moi International Airport in Mombasa, where KAA does not allow them to operate.

HARASSMENT

“We wish to reiterate that KAA does not in any way condone any form of harassment of our esteemed customers, clients, users and/or stakeholders at any of our airports and neither does the Authority nor our staff dictate the choice of transport for airport users,” the authority said.

KAA further adviced the public to use the officially registered Airport Taxis (Yellow Airport Taxis) that can be found at various designated waiting and pick-up points within the airport.

On their part, Uber is willing to work with KAA just like they have done with other airports across the world to develop forward-thinking, efficient operating agreements so that people can get to and from their flights safely, reliably and affordably.

“We are in talks with the Kenya Airport Authority at the airports in Nairobi and Mombasa so that drivers using Uber can seamlessly drop off and pick up riders from the airport like everybody else,” Janet C. Kemboi Communications Associate – East Africa told Nairobi News.
