Jubilee Party to withhold Starehe certificate

The Jubilee Party has announced that the certificate for Starehe constituency will not be issued to Maina Kamanda until investigations are complete.

The announcement was made by Secretary General Raphael Tuju amid protests from Charles Njagua Kanyi aka Jaguar and his supporters who were protesting outside the party headquarters in Pangani.

The protesters camped at the gate chanting anti-Kamanda slogans as President Uhuru Kenyatta spoke on the ongoing party primaries.

The returning officer at the constituency tallying station had announced Kamanda as the winner with 10,374 votes against Jaguar’s 8,391 votes.

PROTESTS

The announcement provoked protests from the musician’s supporters as Kamanda left the tallying centre in a rush.

On Thursday morning, tension was high at the Jamuhuri High School tallying centre as the two aspirants waited for the announcement.

Heavy police presence was witnessed as three lorries of GSU officers drove into the Jamuhuri High School grounds and the officers manned all corners of the school compound.

The school gate had been locked with a padlock with officers barring any more agents from coming in.

Police armed with teargas canisters patrolled the compound as the agents milled around the tallying hall.
