Jubilee MCAs withdraw motion to impeach Governor Kidero
The Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero got a reprieve on Monday after Members of County Assembly aligned to the Jubilee coalition withdrew a motion of impeachment against him.
The MCAs had threatened to impeach Governor Kidero following claims that he bribed Supreme Court Judge Philip Tunoi in order to get a favourable outcome in a suit that challenged his election.
The Nairobi County Assembly will resume its sittings on Tuesday after the Christmas recess.
PREJUDICIAL
Karura MCA Mr Kamau Thuo, who was to sponsor the impeachment motion, said that they had decided to drop it one the advice of the County Assembly clerk Jacob Ngwele who argued that the motion will be prejudicial to an ongoing case.
“The clerk advised us to drop it because the matter is with the tribunal, which is equivalent to the High Court. So discussing it would be prejudicial,” he said.
Mr Thuo said the motion relied on the Judicial Service Commission’s recommendation last Friday that a tribunal should be formed to look into the bribery allegations.
“The clerk told us the JSC just recommended, it did not have evidence to link the governor to the claims. So we listened,” he said.
PUBLIC COFFERS
A Jubilee MCA, who did not want to be named, said the impeachment motion was proposed at a meeting in Dagoretti.
“We must do something, because if it is true that Sh200 million was used to bribe Tunoi, then this money must have come from public coffers,” he said.
The Cord MCAs led by majority whip David Mberia have dared their Jubilee counterparts to bring the impeachment motion, saying that it is doomed to fail.
