Jubilee delegates protest over unpaid allowances

By BRIAN MOSETI September 10th, 2016 2 min read

There were chaotic scenes at Kasarani Stadium on Friday as delegates attending the Jubilee Party launch demanded to be paid allowances before being addressed.

The delegates had said they would not continue with the convention unless they are paid the money they were promised.

They said they were promised that their accommodation, transport and meals would be sorted out but this had not been done.

A number of them say they have gone hungry, lacked places to sleep and have no means of returning home.

Mohammed Ali, who said he is the URP chairman in Isiolo, said he slept on the floor in Eastleigh.

“These people are lying to us, I slept on the floor last night,” he said.

Another delegate from western Kenya, who identified himself as Francis, said he had been promised Sh10,000 daily for three days, but this hasn’t materialised.

“Some of the delegates are receiving only Sh3,000 and this is not the figure promised,” he said.

DIFFERENT AMOUNTS

He said that among delegates from his party, which had 20 attendees from each county, only three from his team had received the Sh3,000 so far.

The delegates claimed that some of them had received different amounts of money in their M-Pesa accounts.

They said that though they had been promised Sh10,000 for the three days, some of them got as little as Sh3,000 while others did not receive a single cent.

“This is not about fighting the party, it’s about taking care of the welfare of the delegates we lead,” said John Chebii, who led TNA delegates from Baringo.

Hassan Ali, who led UPK delegates from Wajir, said his team had not received a single cent.

“We used our own money to come here, which we were told will be refunded. We have not only not received the refund, we have also had to use our money to cater for our food and accommodation,” said Mr Ali.

Andrew Kenga, a UDF delegate from Kilifi, said he received Sh3,000 instead of the Sh5,000 that they had been promised.

Deputy President William Ruto is expected to address the delegates at the Kasarani Indoor Arena ahead of the party’s big launch on Saturday.
