A jilted police officer on Sunday shot and seriously injured a university student in Nairobi’s Embakasi Estate.

The student’s mother, who is the officer’s former partner, was unhurt in the dawn attack.

Police spokesman Charles Owino said the officer had been arrested.

Police said the man fired seven rounds but only six spent cartridges were found at the scene.

The woman narrated how she went home at around 12.30am and found her son watching a movie in the sitting room and went to her bedroom.

Ten minutes later the doorbell rang.

“I asked my son to check who was at the door but he said it was too late to open it. I left my room but before I reached the sitting room, I heard gunshots,” she said.

She said the officer was firing through the windows.

“He went round the house shooting through the windows. One bullet hit my son in the right hand,” she said.

The officer had been to the house on Saturday afternoon but did not find the woman.

Neighbours said the two had been living together and ran a business jointly.
