Jackie Maribe ‘depressed’ over murder case, court told

TV journalist Jackie Maribe could be in a state of depression having been bogged down by her ongoing trial in relation to the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani, court has heard.

The TV presenter is, alongside her ex-boyfriend Joseph ‘Jowie’ Irungu, currently battling murder charges in relation to the gruel death of the woman which is reported to have occurred in Kilimani, a Nairobi suburb in 2018.

Kimani was until her death based in Juba, South Sudan but had briefly returned home when she was found dead at her apartment.

The depression claim was made by State Prosecutor Catherine Mwaniki who explained Maribe’s lawyer Katwa Kigen had indicated as much in a previous hearing.

“We have to know whether the second accused (read Maribe) is mentally fit to follow the proceedings and to continue with the trial and confirm that she is not depressed,” Mwaniki told the court.

“If she is not well, we need to have a mental assessment since all the accused have to be mentally fit to continue with the trial.”

Maribe who is out on bail, has opted for a low profile life for the duration of the case.

The bail terms barred her from reading or reporting news in relation to the case.

The renowned journalist resigned from Citizen TV in 2019 citing personal reasons and has shifted her focus on hosting political bigwigs on her YouTube channel.

She has also been spotted at social gatherings and offered interviews about her life, including relationship with Jowie and comedian Eric Omondi who doubles up as her baby daddy.

Jowie has meanwhile appeared to court trouble and the prosecution recently applied to court to have his bail terms cancelled.

Meanwhile 15 witnesses have already testified in this case which commenced in 2019.
